Bulldog Headlines
• Fresno State has lost its last two home games, just the third and fourth losses at Bulldog Stadium in four seasons now under head coach Tim DeRuyter. The `Dogs are looking to avoid losing three-straight at home for the first time since dropping three-straight at Bulldog Stadium in 2006.
• Bulldog linebackers Robert Stanley and Nela Otukolo both played under Tony Sanchez at Bishop Gorman High School in Las Vegas before Sanchez was hired as UNLV's head coach before this 2015 season.
• Last seasons overtime loss to the Rebels was Fresno State's first to UNLV since 1984. It ended a 10-game winning streak in the series. Fresno State has not lost at home to UNLV since 1983 and is 7-2 all-time against the Rebels in Fresno.
Starting Second Half of the Season
Fresno State owns a 1-5 record in the first half of the season, the first time it has started 1-5 since 2006 and just the seventh time in the modern era of football (since 1972). Looking at the last 20 seasons, the Bulldogs have fared far better in the second half of a season than the first. In the previous 20 years, Fresno State has averaged 3.3 wins in its first six games of a season whereas in the second half of a year the Bulldogs averaged 3.8 wins. Fresno State has won more games in the second half of a season than the first half nine times, had the same amount of wins in seven of those seasons and lost more games in the second half of a year just four times, the last time coming in 2008.

UNLV Edges Fresno State 30-27 in Overtime
The Fresno State football team came back from a 17-0 halftime to force overtime, but fell short in its comeback attempt as the UNLV Rebels defeated the Bulldogs 30-27 Friday night at Sam Boyd Stadium.

Series History vs. UNLV
Fresno State owns a 12-5 record in its 17 all-time meetings against UNLV. The schools first met at Ratcliff Stadium in 1979, a 31-28 loss for the Bulldogs at home. Fresno State also fell in 1983 at home against the Rebels, but since have won six-straight at home over UNLV. The Bulldogs did own a 10-game overall winning streak (home and away games) over the Rebels from 1985-2013, but saw that streak come to an end last season when UNLV won 30-27 in overtime. In the last meeting between the two schools at Bulldog Stadium., Derek Carr hit Davante Adams on a 75-yard touchdown pass on the first play from scrimmage. The `Dogs opened up a 28-14 halftime lead and shutout the Rebels in the second half en route to the 38-14 win on what was Homecoming in 2013.
Scouting UNLV
UNLV is in its first season under head coach Tony Sanchez and is off to a 2-4 start overall and 1-1 mark in Mountain West play with its win coming on the road at Nevada two weeks ago. The Rebels fell at home in overtime last weekend against San Jose State. UNLV for the season ranks in the middle of the league in offensive and defensive numbers. The Rebels rank No. 6 in the Mountain West in both scoring offense (28.3 ppg) and scoring defense (26.8 ppg) while ranking seventh in total offense (382.5 ypg) and ninth in total defense (421.5 ypg). The Rebels are plus-5 in the turnover department this season, throwing seven interceptions and losing just one fumble. They are tied for second in the Mountain West in turnover margin with New Mexico and behind Boise State, who is plus-10.
Stratton Brown Creating Take-Aways
Junior safety Stratton Brown forced a fumble on punt coverage in the first quarter last week, which Fresno State recovered at the Utah State 35-yard line. It was his second forced fumble of the season, the other coming on defense at San Jose State on Sept. 26. Brown has played a part in a turnover in the last three games now. He forced that fumble on defense at San Jose State and recovered a fumble at San Diego State last weekend. Last season, Brown played in 12 games and recorded three tackles (all on special teams) with one fumble recovery on a kickoff. This year, he has 14 tackles (two on special teams) to go with his two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery.
Special Teams Aiding in Turnover Game
With a forced fumble on a punt return, Fresno State has now forced and recovered three fumbles on special teams this year (two on punts, one on kickoff return). As a team, Fresno State has created at least one take-away in all six games and its 11 turnovers gained on the season ranks in a tie for 35th in the FBS and No. 4 in the Mountain West.
→ The six-straight games creating at least one turnover is the most since Fresno State had a take-away in seven-straight games from Oct. 3 through Nov. 29 of last season. The longest streak with at least one turnover gained under head coach Tim DeRuyter is 18-straight games, which came in the first 18 games of his tenure (all 13 games in 2012 and the first five games of 2013).
→ The Bulldogs have now recovered a fumble in five-straight games, giving them seven fumble recoveries on the year. Fresno State ranks in a tie for seventh nationally in fumbles recovered and that ties with New Mexico for the most in the Mountain West.
→ Fresno State has scored touchdowns off of both of its fumble recoveries in the last two games. The Bulldogs have scored 41 points off of 11 take-aways on the season.
→ UNLV has a team has 13 take-aways this year, ranking second in the Mountain West behind Boise State who has 16. Last season in 13 games, the Rebels only recorded 18 take-aways for the entire season.
Anderson Gets First Start at QB
Redshirt freshman Kilton Anderson became the fourth different quarterback to start this season for Fresno State. He finished the game 10-for-20 passing for 112 yards with one touchdown and three interceptions. No other FBS team has started four different quarterbacks this season and there are four other teams (Kansas, Louisville, South Carolina and Syracuse) who have started three different quarterbacks. Going all the way back through 1979 when game-by-game starters were available, Fresno State has never started more than two different quarterbacks in a season. Other programs in recent history to have started four or more quarterbacks in a season include Utah State in 2014 (10-4), Southern Miss in 2012 (0-12), Purdue in 2010 (4-8) and Navy in 1992 (1-10).
→ Going back to the 2014 Hawai`i Bowl when Brian Burrell was the starting quarterback for the Bulldogs, Fresno State has now started five different QBs in its last seven games (1-6 record). From 2002-13, a total of 156 games (95-61 record), Fresno State had just five different starting quarterbacks in that time frame.
→ From 1983 all the way through 2013, there had only been four freshmen (true or redshirt) to start at quarterback for Fresno State. Over the last two seasons, three different Bulldog freshmen have drawn a start under center.
Young Bulldogs Seeing The Field
Fresno State has seen 29 of its players see game action for the first time in a Bulldog uniform this season, the newest being Stephen Van Hook last week against Utah State. Included in that number is four true freshmen and another 13 who are redshirt freshmen. In 2014, Fresno State had 22 players that saw their first game action in a Bulldog uniform with eight of those being true freshmen. The four true freshmen to play this year are linebackers James Bailey and Nela Otukolo, running back Dejonte O'Neal and quarterback Chason Virgil. Otukolo and Virgil both started one game this year, Virgil on Sept. 19 vs. No. 21 Utah and Otukolo at San Diego State on Oct. 3.
→ There have been five Bulldog true freshmen to start under head coach Tim DeRuyter: Otukolo and Virgil this year, Malcolm Washington and Chad Olsen in 2014 and Aaron Peck in 2012. Other recent Bulldog true freshmen to start include Donavon Lewis (2011), Jalen Saunders (2010) and Derron Smith (2010).
→ 15 different Bulldogs have started their first career game this season for Fresno State, including 10 players on the offensive side of the ball.
→ There are 65 players on Fresno State's roster that are either freshmen or sophomores, showing just how young this team is.
Otukolo Records First Career Sack
One week after drawing his first career start in place of the injured Kyrie Wilson, true freshman Nela Otukolo recorded his first career sack against Utah State last weekend. He joined Tobenna Okeke (1.5 sacks in 2014), Shannon Edwards (1.0 sacks in 2012), Donovan Lewis (2.5 sacks, 2011) and Travis Brown (2.0 sacks in 2010) as the latest Bulldogs over the last five seasons to record a sack during a true freshmen season.
Team Sacks
Fresno State posted two sacks last week against Utah State, giving the Bulldogs 17 on the season. Last season through six games, Fresno State only had 10 sacks, but in 2012 and 2013 the Bulldogs had 20 and 22 sacks, respectively, through six games. The Bulldogs ranked in the top 10 nationally in both the 2012 and 2013 seasons in sacks with 40 each year, but in 2014 Fresno State only posted 30 sacks to rank 65th in the FBS. This year, with 17 sacks to date, Fresno State ranks third in the Mountain West and is tied for 19th nationally.
Jamire Jordan Scores Again
Redshirt freshman Jamire Jordan had five receptions (all in the first half) for 44 yards and one touchdown last week against Utah State. It was his fourth touchdown reception of the season and fifth overall touchdown (had a rushing TD at San Jose State). His five total touchdowns this season is two more than any other Bulldog has this year. This season, Jordan leads all Bulldogs in receptions (21), receiving yardage (253), touchdowns (four) and is third in all-purpose yardage (428). His four TD receptions are tied for the second-most in the Mountain West - those other two receivers being UNLV's Devonte Boyd and the other Colorado State's Rashard Higgins.
Scott Leads Improved Kickoff Return Unit
Fresno State junior Da'Mari Scott returned the games opening kickoff 45 yards last week against Utah State. It was his second return of over 45 yards this season, shy of his 66-yard return at San Jose State, which was the longest for a Bulldog since Nov. 7, 2008 when A.J. Jefferson recorded a 92-yard return for a touchdown against Nevada. Scott ranks third in the Mountain West with a kickoff return average of 24.8 yards and it is only a matter of time before Scott takes one back to the house to end the streak that is now up to 89 consecutive games since the last kickoff return for a TD.
→ The last Bulldog with two kickoff returns of 45 yards or longer in a season was Isaiah Burse back in 2011. He had returns of 47 and 46 yards (also had a 42 yard return). Burse was also the last Bulldog to average over 24 yards on kickoff returns for an entire season, doing so in 2010 with a 26.3 average.
Waller Finds End Zone
Senior running back Marteze Waller, a preseason All-Mountain West selection and 2014 second-team All-MW pick, scored his first rushing touchdown of the season last week. His one-yard rushing touchdown in the fourth quarter was the first of the season by any Bulldog running back. You have to go all the way back to 2000 to find the last time when it took this long into a season to score a rushing touchdown. That year, Fresno State scored its first TD on the ground in game four.
→ Waller's TD snapped an eight-game drought where he did not have a rushing touchdown. Before the Utah State TD, his last rushing touchdown was on Nov. 29, 2014 in the regular season finale against Hawai`i (he had two rushing TDs that game).
→ Waller had seven 100-yard rushing games last season, including going for over 100 yards in 6-of-8 league games. This year, Waller has posted just one 100-yard rushing game and that came back in the season opener against Abilene Christian when he ran for 154 yards. It is not just Waller failing to get the rushing attack going. In the five games since that Abilene Christian game, Fresno State as a team has averaged just 93.8 yards rushing (2.7 ypc), 148.4 yards passing (.532 completion percentage) and only 242.2 yards of total offense (3.9 yards per play).
→ Last year against UNLV, Waller had 137 yards rushing on 17 carries with one touchdown.
Third-Down Comparison
Both Fresno State and UNLV this season are comparable on offense when it comes to third-down conversions. They are tied for ninth in the Mountain West and 107th nationally with a conversion percentage of 34.1 percent (30-of-84). On the defensive side of the ball, UNLV ranks fifth in the league in third-down defense whereas Fresno State is last and ranks 124th out of 127 teams. Rebel opponents are converting 36.2 percent of its third-down plays while Bulldog opponents are converting 53.8 percent.
→ In last seasons matchup between Fresno State and UNLV, the Rebels were 8-of-21 on third downs while the Bulldogs went just 2-of-14.
Bulldog WRs vs. UNLV
In the last two meetings with UNLV, a Bulldog wide receiver has posted huge numbers. Back in 2013, Davante Adams had eight catches for 221 yards and four touchdowns. The 221 yards ranks as the 12th most by a receiver in a single-game in program history while the four TD receptions is tied for the most in a game by any Bulldog. The following year at UNLV in 2014, Josh Harper had 12 catches for 187 yards and one touchdown. His number of catches and yardage were both season-highs for Harper who was a first-team All-MW selection last season.
→ The only Bulldog wide receiver on this year's team who has played against UNLV in his career is Da'Mari Scott, who has just one catch for eight yards that came against the Rebels back in 2013.
→ However last season, tight end Chad Olsen had a big game against the Rebels. Olsen had four receptions for 55 yards and two touchdowns in the overtime loss.
This-N-That
• Fresno State ranks No. 115 out of 127 in time of possession this year, averaging possession of the ball 26:04 per game. Out of the 12 teams ranked below them in ball control, only four of them have losing records and that includes Hawai`i. Hawai`i averages possession for just 22:56 per game and is the only team in the Mountain West ranked below the Bulldogs in time of possession.
• Senior Garrett Swanson had the first punt of his career blocked last weekend by Utah State.
• True freshman James Bailey led the Bulldogs in tackles against Utah State with six stops. Back on Sept. 26 at San Jose State he had nine tackles and recovered a fumble. His nine tackles were the most by a Bulldog freshman since Ben Jacobs(RFr.) had 16 tackles at No. 23 Texas A&M in 2007. Bailey is sixth on the team this year with 23 tackles and he also had 1.5 tackles for a loss, two pass breakups, one quarterback hurry and the one fumble recovery.

• DE Todd Hunt had a career-high nine tackles in last seasons game at UNLV. He was one of four Bulldogs with four or more tackles, the others being NG Tyeler Davison (14), OLB Donovan Lewis (10) and Karl Mickelsen (nine).
• Two Fresno State linebackers are from Las Vegas' Bishop Gorman High School where they were coached by now UNLV head coach Tony Sanchez. ILB Robert Stanley is in his third season at Fresno State and this year has eight tackles and one pass breakup. Nela Otukolo, a true freshman who helped Bishop Gorman to a No. 1 national ranking in USA Today's High School Sports Super 25 rankings last year under Sanchez, has 18 tackles this year, 2.5 tackles for a loss, one sack and one fumble recovery.
Going for 10+ in Four-Straight
ILB Jeff Camilli had his streak of games with 10 or more tackles snapped last week against Utah State when he recorded just one tackle in the loss. Camilli had posted 10 or more tackles in three consecutive games with a career-high of 14 against San Diego State on Oct. 3. His streak of three-straight games with 10 or more tackles was the most since 2008 when linebacker Ben Jacobs had double-digit tackles in three consecutive games. To find the last time a Bulldog had 10+ tackles in four or more consecutive games you have to go all the way back to 1997. That year Tim Skipper posted double-digit tackles in the first six games of the season, but he was bested by teammate A.J. Gass. Gass posted 10 or more tackles in all nine games he played in that season. He missed weeks 2-4 with an injury, but after that posted 10 or more tackles in the last eight games of that season. Gass finished 1997 with 123 tackles, which to this day ranks as the ninth most in Fresno State single-season history. Marcus Riley in 2007 is the only player since Gass in 1997 to record more tackles in a season. Riley had 132 tackles that year and also had three-straight games with double-digit tackles, but never four consecutive.
