Bulldogs Win MW Title with 48-15 Victory Saturday
Tim DeRuyter vowed to make winning conference championships Fresno State's No. 1 goal. Well after a 48-15 victory over Air Force on Saturday in Bulldog Stadium, the 'Dogs captured the Mountain West title in their first year under DeRuyter and it is the school's first conference championship since 1999.

Bulldog Headlines
• Ejiro Ederaine's 40.0 career tackles for a loss ranks as the sixth most in Mountain West history and is the third-most among all active FBS players. His 17.5 career sacks ranks as the 11th most among all active FBS players.
• The Bulldogs are in search of their first back-to-back victories of the season and first road win on the year. 2006 was the last season when it took the `Dogs this long into a year to pick up a road win. That season, Fresno State picked up its first victory away from home on Nov. 11 at New Mexico State.
DeRuyter Returns to Alma Mater
Fresno State head coach Tim DeRuyter graduated from Air Force in 1985 with a bachelor's degree in management. He also coached there from 1989-92 and again from 2007-09. However, in his 25-year coaching career (18 of it spent coaching away from Air Force), he has only returned once on the opposing sideline to face his alma mater. That came when he was the defensive coordinator at Navy in 2000, a year in which the Naval Academy fell to the Air Force Academy, 27-13.
In that 2000 meeting, DeRuyter's defense held the Falcons to 172 yards below their rushing average. Navy trailed 17-13 late in the third quarter, but the Midshipmen had two fourth-quarter turnovers that cost them in the 14-point loss.
→ Another Bulldog coach who is an Air Force alum is defensive graduate assistant coach Overton Spence, Jr. Spence was at the Academy from 2001-06, playing both inside and outside linebacker for the Falcons. He spent eight years of active military duty, which included a 2011 deployment to Iraq and a seven-month deployment to Afghanistan from 2013-14. Spence joined the Bulldog coaching staff in November of 2014.
Scouting The Falcons
Air Force sits at 3-3 on the year and 2-1 in Mountain West play, in a three-way tie for second in the Mountain Division. The Falcons are 3-0 at home this year and 2-0 in MW home games having defeated San Jose State 37-16 and Wyoming 31-17. Air Force is coming off a 38-23 loss at Colorado State last week when the Rams threw for 296 yards on the Falcons and forced Air Force into two turnovers. The Falcons with their option rushing attack lead the Mountain West and rank fifth nationally in rushing at 312.2 yards per game. Air Force is also third in the league in scoring at 31.0 points per game. Defensively, the Falcons rank No. 4 in the conference in both scoring defense (24.3 ppg) and total defense (326.5 ypg), although CSU put up 456 total yards last week.
Series History vs. Air Force
Saturday's game will be the eighth in the series between Fresno State and Air Force and the first meeting at Falcon stadium since Oct. 18, 1997. The Falcons lead the all-time series 4-3, but Fresno State won the last matchup 48-15 at home in the 2012 regular season finale. That is the only meeting between the two schools as members of the Mountain West, but in past history the programs met five times as members of the Western Athletic Conference. Air Force held a 3-2 advantage in those games. The only meeting between the schools outside of conference affiliated games was the 2000 Silicon Valley Football Classic bowl game that the Falcons won 37-34 on New Years Eve.
Facing Option Rushing Teams
This will be Fresno State's sixth game in four seasons under head coach Tim DeRuyter going up against an option rushing team and second against Air Force. The Bulldogs have gotten better and better against this (now) unique type of offense the more they have faced it. Totaling up the five games vs. option teams, the 'Dogs have allowed an average of 243.0 yards per game.
Big Leap
Redshirt freshman quarterback Kilton Anderson made noticeable improvements from his first career start vs. Utah State to his second last weekend against UNLV. He threw for 112 yards on 10-of-20 passing with one touchdown and three interceptions in start No. 1 against USU. Last week, he was 19-of-31 passing for 193 yards with no interceptions. Anderson also ran for 78 yards on 11 carries with two touchdowns. His 78 rushing yards is the most by a Bulldog quarterback in any game since the turn of the century.
→ Anderson's two scores on the ground matched the total number of rushing touchdowns the Bulldogs had as a team in the first six games of the season.
→ He led the Bulldog offense to 410 yards, their highest output since the season opener against an FCS opponent. The 31 points scored against UNLV is also the most since putting up 34 against Abilene Christian. Fresno State is 24-1 in the last four years when scoring 30 or more points in a game.
→ Led Fresno State to more total offense (198 yards) in the first 23:49 of the game than it had total in all 60 minutes of its two previous games.
Comeback Victory
Prior to last weekend, Fresno State had a 1-18 record in games when it trailed entering the fourth quarter. The Bulldogs flipped those misfortunes last weekend when it outscored UNLV 14-0 in the final frame to erase what was an 11-point deficit after three quarters to come back and win 31-28. Fresno State outgained UNLV 114-58 in the fourth quarter, held the Rebels to 1-of-5 on third down plays and recorded four sacks, including a sack on UNLV's final two plays of the game to seal the victory.
→ Kilton Anderson became the first Bulldog quarterback to lead a fourth-quarter comeback for a victory since Derek Carrdid so in 2013 against Rutgers.
→ Marteze Waller's game-winning 38-yard rushing touchdown with 2:37 left to play tied for the longest rush Fresno State has recorded this year (tied his 38-yard run against Abilene Christian).
Waller Gets Back on Track
After rushing for 154 yards in the season opener against Abilene Christian, senior running back Marteze Waller averaged just 63 yards and had one rushing touchdown over the last five games. He busted out of that rut with a 111-yard rushing performance against UNLV last week. Waller averaged 5.3 yards per carry in the game and scored two touchdowns.
→ It was Waller's 10th career 100-yard rushing game, which ranks as the ninth-most in school history.
→ Helped Fresno State as a team rush for 217 yards in the win. Fresno State owns a perfect 14-0 record over the last four seasons in games in which it runs for over 200 yards as a team.
→ He now has six career games where he has scored two rushing touchdowns.
→ Waller had not scored a rushing TD in seven-straight games dating back to November of 2014, but he now has three in last two games.
→ He moved up into fifth place on Fresno State's all-time rushing record list, passing Dwayne Wright (2003-06). Waller now needs 232 yards to become the fifth tailback in school history to run for over 3,000 yards in a career.
Did You Know?
→ Kilton Anderson and Marteze Waller are the first pair of rushers to score two rushing TDs in a game since Anthony Harding (2) and Lonyae Miller (2) vs. Colorado State in the 2008 New Mexico Bowl.
→ Kilton Anderson is the first QB to run for two TDs since Tom Brandstater vs. New Mexico State (Nov. 15, 2008).
Ederaine With Eyes on Mountain West Record
Bulldog senior outside linebacker Ejiro Ederaine is coming off a 12-tackle, 3.0 tackle for a loss and 1.5 sack performance against UNLV. It was his 10th career game with multiple tackles for a loss (fourth this season). He now has 40.0 career tackles for a loss, which ranks No. 6 in Mountain West history. The all-time MW leader in tackles for a loss is San Diego State's Miles Burris (2008-11) with 47.0. Ederaine currently ranks No. 3 in the FBS among active players in career tackles for a loss and his 17.5 career sacks is the 11th most among active players.
→ Ederaine is tied for the Mountain West lead in tackles for a loss with 11.0 this year and is second in sacks with 5.5.
→ His 1.5 sacks against UNLV gave him his second game this season and fifth of his career with multiple sacks.
→ He has three games this year with 10 or more tackles and six in his career. His 12 tackles against UNLV were one off his career-high of 13 that he set against No. 21 Utah on Sept. 19.
→ His 57 tackles this year leads the team and is tied for the fourth-most in the Mountain West. He is averaging 8.1 tackles per game and if he hits that average against Air Force, he would set a new personal best for tackles in a year. Ederaine had 64 tackles last year as a junior. The three-year starter has made 31 consecutive starts.
→ He has led the team in tackles in three games this season and done so six times in his career.
Defensive Improvement
The 299 yards of total offense allowed by Fresno State was the lowest total to an FBS team since San Diego State on Oct. 3, 2014 (270 yards). The Bulldogs only gave up three plays of over 20 yards in the game with the longest being a 39-yard run. For the season, Fresno State had been averaging allowing 5.0 plays of over 20 yards per game and had allowed 12 total in its two previous games. A big part of the success on defense was the fact that Fresno State matched its season-high with six sacks in the game. The Bulldogs lead the Mountain West in sacks with 23 on the year and that ranks No. 12 in the FBS.
→ The Bulldog defense shut out UNLV in the fourth quarter and held them to 58 total yards in the final 15 minutes to allow for the comeback victory.
→ Fresno State forced UNLV to punt seven times, the most an opponent has done so since the opener vs. Abilene Christian.
→ The Fresno State defense forced six three-and-outs vs. UNLV.
→ The defense had two new starters vs. UNLV, James Bailey and Alan Wright. Four first-year Bulldogs have made starts in 2015, including two true freshmen.
More on Bailey's Start
OLB James Bailey became the sixth true freshmen under head coach Tim DeRuyter to draw a start, as he recorded seven tackles and 0.5 tackles for a loss against UNLV last week when he was in the starting lineup. Other Bulldog true freshmen to start under DeRuyter include Nela Otukolo and Chason Virgil this year, Malcolm Washington and Chad Olsen in 2014 and Aaron Peck in 2012.
→ Since recording a season-high nine tackles at San Diego State, Bailey has recorded at least six tackles in three of the last four games.
→ Bailey ranks fifth on the team with 30 tackles and he has 2.0 tackles for a loss, two pass breakups, one fumble recovery and one quarterback hurry this season.
New Father with a Big Game
Senior defensive end Todd Hunt, who had his first child born the night before, played one of the best games of his career in helping Fresno State come back to beat UNLV last week. Hunt posted eight tackles in the game, which was one off his career-high of nine that he set last season also against the Rebels. Hunt had one sack in the game, a pass breakup and one quarterback hurry to his stat line. For the season, Hunt leads all defensive linemen with 28 tackles and he has 3.0 tackles for a loss and 2.0 sacks.
Jordan Leads Receivers
For the third time this season, Bulldog redshirt freshman Jamire Jordan caught five passes in a game and his five grabs went for 42 yards vs. UNLV. Jordan also had five grabs in the San Jose Stat game on Sept. 26 and again in the Utah State game. He leads the team with 26 catches for 295 yards and his four touchdown receptions are tied for the fourth most in the Mountain West. Jordan is also in possession of the only 100-yard receiving game this year, which he put up against No. 21 Utah on Sept. 19 when he had three catches for 102 yards and one touchdown.
→ There have been just three Bulldogs in the modern era since freshmen were allowed to play in 1972 that a freshman has led the team in receptions. Charles Smith was the first to do so in 1998 with 42 receptions for 612 yards and three touchdowns. Chastin West was next in 2006 with 33 catches for 365 yards and three TDs and the last to do so was Davante Adams in 2012 when he had 102 catches for 1,312 yards and 14 touchdowns in an All-American season.
Bulldog Throwback
In the Oct. 18, 1997 meeting between Air Force and Fresno State, the Bulldogs flew into Colorado Springs with all the odds stacked against them. The Falcons entered the contest as the No. 18 ranked team in the country and had won eight-straight games. Fresno State had never won a game in six tries at the then WAC front range member schools (Colorado State, Air Force or Wyoming). The `Dogs were coming off a disheartening 28-16 loss at Hawai`i the week before. But the Bulldogs rebounded with a gritty 20-17 win, with kicker Jeff Hanna providing the margin of victory. Hanna kicked a career-best 51-yard field goal with 9:42 left in the game to give the `Dogs their final points.
The Bulldogs did trail 17-10 entering the fourth quarter after Air Force rattled off 17 unanswered points, but the final 15 minutes belonged to the Bulldogs. Fresno State forced three turnovers in the final frame and scored on a 13-yard pass from Billy Volek to Jaime Kimbrough to tie the game before Hanna's kick. Air Force's Alex Wright lined up for a potential game-tying 51-yard field goal with under three minutes left, but it was blocked and the Bulldogs posted what was then their fifth win over a ranked opponent.
Green Getting a Knack for the Sack
Sophomore outside linebacker Justin Green's sack on fourth down with 1:27 left in the game preserved the Bulldog come-from-behind victory last Friday night against UNLV. Green this season has become a pass-rushing specialists for the Bulldogs and of his 14 tackles on the year, three of them have been sacks. Green has 4.0 tackles for a loss and also has forced a fumble.
This-N-That
• On the Bulldogs' first drive of the game against UNLV, they had a 12-play, 83-yard touchdown drive that was the longest drive of the season in terms of yards. Fresno State converted all four of its third-down plays on the drive. The `Dogs only had three total third-down conversions over their previous two games at San Diego State and vs. Utah State. Fresno State went 9-for-17 on third downs, its best performance on third downs this season.
• Fresno State's first two drives of the game were its longest two of the season. The opening drive that went for a TD lasted 5:28, and its second drive lasted 5:30 (a missed FG). Prior to UNLV, the Bulldogs longest sustained drive was 4:27 vs. Utah that ended with a fumble.
• Eight different receivers caught a pass from Kilton Anderson's 19 completions last week against UNLV. It was the most different receivers to catch a pass in a game this season.
• Fresno State missed a pair of field goals last week in the win. It was the first time under head coach Tim DeRuyter and first since the game at Ole Miss in 2011 the Fresno State had missed multiple field goal attempts in a game.
• Inside linebacker Jeff Camilli recorded nine tackles and had two pass breakups in the win over UNLV. They were just the second and third pass breakups of his career, and his second one in the game came on the first-down play when UNLV had the ball down three at the Bulldog 36-yard line with under two minutes remaining.
• Along with Ejiro Ederaine ranking second in the MW in sacks, DE Claudell Louis is right behind him in third place with 4.5 sacks on the season. Louis has 26 tackles halfway through his senior season with 5.0 tackles for a loss, one pass breakup and one fumble recovery.
• The Bulldogs had four rushing touchdowns in the win over UNLV. That is the most TDs on the ground under head coach Tim DeRuyter and the most since Sept. 18, 2010 against Utah State - a span of 70 games. Fresno State rushed 44 times for 230 yards and those four rushing TDs against Utah State back in 2010.
• Sophomore tight end Chad Olsen had three catches for 44 yards against UNLV. In the three games before that, he had only one catch for three yards.
