Fresno State Lands Lake Travis (TX) Recruit James Bailey

Cary Edmondson-USA TODAY Sports
The Bulldogs have tapped into the Lone Star State before, and they do so again in landing the newest member of their 2015 class.

Bulldogs head coach Tim DeRuyter has made good use of his Texas connections to strengthen Fresno State's recruiting process in the last couple years, and today he landed another future piece for his secondary with the commitment of Lake Travis's James Bailey.

Listed as a safety at 24/7 Sports, the six-foot and 192-pound Bailey becomes the second defensive back in next year's recruiting class after local product A.J. Greeley.  He's also listed as an outside linebacker at certain outlets, and it's easy to see why the coaching staff is excited about his potential versatility:

Lake Travis' James Bailey runs down Humble Atascocita's Greg Campbell during a 2013 playoff game. Bailey committed to Fresno State's football program on Monday.

A future Cyclone will lead Lake Travis' offense this fall. A Bulldog-in-waiting will help anchor the Cavaliers' defense.

James Bailey, a rising senior at Lake Travis, announced on his Twitter account on Monday that he will play football at Fresno State. The Bulldogs posted an 11-2 record in 2013, and the college has former LBJ defensive back Randon Knotts and ex-Westwood kicker Colin McGuire on its 2014 roster.

Bailey will join Lake Travis quarterback Dominic DeLira among the Austin area's 2015 recruits. DeLira will play football for an Iowa State program that also offered Bailey a scholarship.

Listed on Rivals.com as a six-foot-two-inch, 180-pound defensive back, Bailey is coming off a season in which he earned first-team all-district honors as a linebacker. Bailey recorded 70 tackles and four sacks during his junior season, and he also broke up seven pass attempts.

Lake Travis allowed 14.3 points per game in 2013, and the Cavaliers will return six defensive starters this fall.

Bailey Commits to Bulldogs

Austin (Texas) Lake Travis safety James Bailey took to Twitter on Monday to announce his commitment to Fresno State...

While it looked like he could potentially announce for Iowa State, Austin (Texas) Lake Travis safety James Bailey took to Twitter on Monday afternoon to share the news that he had committed to Fresno State.

Last week, the 6-foot, 197-pound prospect took visits to Fresno State, Nevada, and Iowa State, telling AllCyclones.com shortly afterwards that the Cyclones were his favorite; his high school teammate, quarterback Dominic DiLira, is an ISU commit.
"Fresno State was the better choice for me. It felt like home."
However, he took some time to ponder the decision and realized the West Coast suited him best.
"It was the better choice for me. It felt like home. After all my emotions calmed down, I realized Fresno State is where it's at for me," he told AllCyclones.com's Trey Scott on Monday night.

The athlete formerly played linebacker for the Cavaliers, but worked on making the switch to safety this off-season.

"The first week, it took a while to get used to, but now I'm just loving it. It's easier for me to react and see the ball and where it is going. I've gotten bigger and faster. I've been running track, and that has really helped my speed. I've become more confident as a player, too," he said this spring.

As for what he plans to bring to a next-level defense, Bailey says, "I would love to play either linebacker or safety. I can bring intensity to a college defense. I love to go out there and try my hardest and bring the energy out to the field."

Bailey Has Favorite After Visits

Lake Travis's James Bailey perfectly fits the type of player the Cyclones are looking for as a nickelback. The Cyclones fit Bailey well, too

A week's worth of visits completed — Fresno State on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday at Nevada, Friday at Iowa State — and Lake Travis (TX) defensive back James Bailey is able to call one school his leader.

"My favorite right now is Iowa State for sure," Bailey told AllCyclones.com on Friday night. "Then Fresno, then like Texas State."

The 6-foot, 197-pound Bailey was a standout at the Cyclones' camp. The fact that it was non-padded didn't stop him from playing rough, battling with receivers to the ground and giving pass-catchers a hard shove the moment their mitts touched the football.

"I showed them my man coverage, my physicality," Bailey said. "Coach Rhoads said he appreciated I came out here and did really well, too."

Bailey's held an Iowa State offer since the spring, having caught the eye of Tommy Mangino on his Central Texas trips to check out quarterback Dominic DeLira, who the Cyclones eventually offered and added as a member of the 2015 class.

"Dom's texting me, asking how I liked it, how's the coaches, it's cool," Bailey said.

Rhoads likes to say he recruits 12 positions on defense, the nickelback being the new add, and he spoke about that at Big 12 Media Days, saying they were looking for a safety/SAM 'backer hybrid.

Bailey fits that mold perfectly. He played linebacker for the Cavaliers last season and will be a safety this fall. He's long and lean, with the physique of a soccer player. In fact, he's nearly a clone of former ISU nickel Charlie Rogers, who played well as a freshman before strangely transferring to Iowa Western.

A timetable is murky at this point. Bailey could shut down his recruitment tomorrow and pick Iowa State, or he might keep the door open for new interest and offers.

"It all depends," he said.

The Cyclones, though, are in great shape.

"It's awesome, it's so cool," Bailey said of the ISU campus. "I was so impressed with the weight room and locker room, it was so cool. The environment, too, was great."

Planned Visits for Bailey

Scout.com was on hand for the Texas State 7-on-7 tournament. Several top teams and players were in action. In this update, we caught up with Lake Travis linebacker/defensive back James Bailey from Austin, Texas. Schools have told him that there is a place for him on their roster. Now, they just have to figure out where he is best suited. And trust, there’s no wrong answer to that question.

If there's one thing that Austin (Tex.) Lake Travis defender James Bailey has going for himself is versatility. He's already played a couple of positions on the high school level, and with the increased use of hybrid athletes in college that should bode well for him.

And so far it has.

"I played rover as sophomore and junior, but I missed a few games as a junior because of a concussion. For my senior year, I will play free safety," Bailey said. "I'm fast and can play multiple positions. I have a wide range. Most (college coaches) want me as an outside linebacker, then possibly work me as a free safety."

Either way, the 6-foot-2, 195-pound Bailey will find himself on a college roster. In fact, programs like Iowa State, Fresno State, North Texas, Texas State, Nevada, New Mexico and Stephen F. Austin have already made it known that it would be a great addition to have him on the team.

At the time of the interview, Bailey had not yet made any visits, but this is the week he stated that he would be in New Mexico. Next week and the weeks that follow will include trips to Iowa State and Nevada.

"I love the recruiting process right now. And it’s exciting know that two-a-days are right around the corner," Bailey said.

I have a confession to make.

When I sat down to pick the names on the first class of the Lake Travis View Fab 5 for the guys, it was more difficult than I could have foreseen.  See, when I sat down and picked the girls, it was fairly easy. Once I had that one unknown athlete who was ready for a breakout year selected, everything fell into place.

The boys, on the other hand, have a lot of returning faces from last year’s terrific campaign for boys sports at Lake Travis High School. Needless to say, having too much of a good thing is a great problem to have.

To explain, the idea behind the Fab 5 is to profile the five athletes, male and female, worth buying a ticket to go watch. It’s not based on awards as much as potential. Simply put, these are the athletes we think have an early shot at the 2015 Athlete of the Year honors.

Maybe listening to Echosmith’s “Cool Kids” while writing this was only fitting.

The class is headed up by none other than quarterback Dominic DeLira. Lake Travis is quickly becoming Quarterback High, and DeLira is the latest in a string of quarterbacks going back to the early run of state championships for the Cavaliers. Just in the last six seasons, we’ve witnessed St. Louis Rams rookie Garrett Gilbert, Virginia Tech’s Michael Brewer and Oklahoma’s Baker Mayfield.
Where does DeLira fit into this? He’s keeping the Big 12 tradition alive with a verbal commitment to Iowa State. Gilbert started at Texas before transferring to SMU. Brewer started at Texas Tech before transferring this season to Virginia Tech. And Mayfield went from one Big 12 school to another when he left Texas Tech in December and went to Oklahoma. Oh, and DeLira is listed as the No. 5 QB in the state by Dave Campbell’s Texas Football magazine.

Staying with football, James Bailey joins DeLira in the Fab 5. If you’re looking for a breakout season, Bailey’s likely going to have it. He’s listed as one of the top defensive backs in the state by Dave Campbell’s Texas Football.

He’s reported to have interest from Baylor, Texas Tech, North Texas and Tulsa, according to ESPN. Those offers will likely be pouring in before the season’s over. Dave Campbell’s Texas Football held Bailey in high regard, naming him as the favorite to be District 14-6A’s top defensive player. He is also a three-sport athlete, competing on the basketball and track and field teams.

Speaking of basketball, head coach Clint Baty has to be smiling about the upcoming season. He returns his top two players in Tate Searle and Jake Budde. Budde and Searle were both all-district and All-Central Texas honorees last year, and Budde was selected to the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches’ all-state team. With Budde and Searle on the court, Lake Travis’ chances for a four-peat as district champions are pretty good.

Rounding out the Fab 5 for the guys is baseball player Jared Triolo. Triolo, a junior, had his breakout season last year while earning the district’s top newcomer award. Lake Travis’ baseball team lost a lot of talent due to graduation, but Triolo is one of those players that could make a difference and keep Lake Travis in the hunt come 2015.

FAB 5 MALES
The Lake Travis View Fab 5 are lists of male and female athletes at Lake Travis that are ones to keep an eye on. Simply put, these are the five early candidates for the 2015 Lake Travis View Athlete of the Year. Ladies were last week, so now it’s the boys turn.
DOMINIC DeLIRA, sr., football
We’ll probably hear a lot from De Lira in the fall as he’s regarded as one of the state’s top five quarterbacks. He’s also headed to Iowa State after he graduates in 2015. .
TATE SEARLE, sr., basketball
Searle is one of two key returnees for the Cavaliers. His presence in the back court, along with his shooting ability makes the Cavalier hoopsters a favorite in 14-6A.
JAMES BAILEY, sr., football, basketball, track and field
Bailey is another name we might hear a lot in the fall. Regarded as one of the best defensive backs in the state, the 6-foot, 204 pound senior will be a key player on the always good Cavalier defense.
JAKE BUDDE, sr., basketball
Budde is a returning all-state player for the Lake Travis boys basketball team. A lot of coaches are glad to see that in the offeseason. Budde and Searle make up one of the best backcourts in Central Texas.
JARED TRIOLO, jr., baseball
Triolo is one of a handful of key returnees for the Cavalier baseball team. He was District 15-5A’s Newcomer of the Year and helped Lake Travis to the regional quarterfinals.
Honorable mention: Grant Foster, sr., football; Cort Wolleat, jr., cross country and track and field; Jackson Parthasarthy, jr., baseball; Jon Michael Brooks, sr., soccer; Parker Fyfe, jr., soccer
