The Fresno State Bulldogs held the first practice in half pads on Saturday morning.
The Fresno State Bulldogs held its first day in half pads on Saturday. The team will have one more half-pad practice Sunday before getting to practice in full gear.
Day three, first day in half pads, I like how the competition went," DeRuyter said. "I like how the competition level is going up every day."
Fresno State is still getting acclimated to 41 newcomers on the team. Freshman linebacker James Bailey and freshman wide receiver L.J. Reed earned DeRuyter's praise after Saturday's practice.
Those who are returning from spring have shown to be a step faster than they were in the spring.
"I think anytime you have guys that are older and are not hesitant because they don't know what to do, you get a chance to play more aggressively," DeRuyter said. "You play faster."
Bo Bonnheim sat out of Saturday's practice due to a minor injury. Jacob Vasquez moved into his first team center spot for the day. Donnie Green stepped into the second team guard spot.
While most of the team was in half pads, new quarterback Ford Childress had to stay in only helmet protection for the day as he started a day late. He still got to participate in most of the team drills.
