FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State football team heldits first scrimmage of the spring season on Saturday morning at Bulldog Stadium. It was a time for players to put into action what's been learned over the last two weeks and make their cases to be evaluated for depth chart movement heading into the second half of spring football.
"The first scrimmage was about what we expected," said head coach Tim DeRuyter. "The defense is typically a little bit ahead. I thought our defense did a great job pressuring. We got some veterans on that side of the ball that understand what we're doing and we are playing a little bit faster on that side of the ball right now.
"Whereas on offense we are installing new schemes. It takes a little bit longer, but for being brand new and being eight practices in, I thought our offense did some good things. Overall, the defense probably had the upper hand, which like I said, is kind of what you expect at this time."
The defense kept steady pressure on the offense, tallying nine tackles for a loss, six of which were sacks -- veterans like James BaileyJustin GreenNathan Madsen and Tobenna Okeke all got to the quarterback, respectively.
"You expect those guys to make plays," DeRuyter said. "So on that side you're happy. Our guys are understanding our pressures and running them at a pretty good rate right now. And it takes a while for the offense to get it all figured out. The defense is a little bit ahead mentally."
The offense did excel at times, and did not turn the ball over. Chason Virgil used his mobility multiple times to escape pressure and move the chains. Although, the passing game was limited with Virgil and Ford Childress behind center. The longest pitch-and-catch was a 20-yard completion to Jared Rice from Ford during an end of half two-minute drill. Ford also connected with Michael Martens for 16 yards on the drill, while Dejonte O'Neal capped the drive by busting a 24-yard TD run.
"The guy is a playmaker," DeRuyter said on O'Neal's behalf. "We've known that. He's a guy that can play slot, and today he had some nice runs at running back by making guys miss."
In total, two touchdowns were scored on Saturday, and O'Neal accounted for each of them. Earlier in the scrimmage, the sophomore rushed for eight yards on a first-and-goal situation. Ford was also at the helm for that drive, the team started at its own 35 and scored in seven plays.
Special teams wise, Kody Kroening connected on both PAT attempts. Kroening missed a 35-yard field goal while Jimmy Camacho was 2-for-3 on field goal attempts -- hitting from 42 and 45, and no good from 47.
For the offense, those that ran out with the first-team on Saturday were Chason Virgil (QB), Dontel James (RB), Aaron Peck (WR), Da'Mari Scott (WR), Delvon Hardaway (WR), Christian Cronk (OL), Aaron Mitchell (OL), Jacob Vazquez (OL),Micah St. Andrew (OL), David Patterson (OL) and Chad Olsen (TE).
The defensive first unit used: Nick Kristofors (DL), Patrick Belony (DL), Nathan Madsen (DL), James Bailey (OLB),Tobenna Okeke (OLB), Nela Otukolo (ILB), Robert Stanley (ILB), Daquawn Brown (CB), Malcolm Washington (CB),Stratton Brown (S) and DeShawn Potts (S).
The Bulldogs will move into the second half of spring football next week. Practices No. 9 and 10 (of 15) will be held before the second scrimmage, which is slated for Friday (March 18) at 7:45 a.m. Scrimmage No. 2 is open to the public as well as the final scrimmage on April 2.
